Dental cavity, also known as caries or tooth decay is a damage caused to the hard tooth structure by bacteria in the tooth. There is a progressive breakdown of tissue and dental caries appear as holes in teeth. Caries may also appear as a soft decayed area in a tooth, which, if allowed to progress can lead to the death of a tooth. Although a tooth, like bones in your body is also made of calcium and phosphorus, unlike a fractured bone, a destroyed tooth structure does not regenerate on its own. The basic reason behind this is that concentration of calcium and phosphorus is much higher in teeth than it is in bones. Re-mineralization of teeth having small carious lesions is possible with optimal levels of oral hygiene but not a sure cure for dental caries. Small lesions are sometime cured by topical application of fluoride but large lesions have to be filled up to stop progression of dental caries and to save the affected tooth. A dentist uses a dental drill to remove decayed material from the tooth. If the decay in the dentin has reached the pulp, the dentist uses a dental spoon to remove decayed material. Once the decay has been removed the ‘hole’ in the tooth is filled up relevant substances keeping in mind the aesthetics and to restore functionality. While there are different materials available for filling dental caries the major goal of treatment is to prevent further decay of the tooth structure.

Restorative materials for filling dental cavities include amalgam (an alloy of mercury, usually with silver), composite resin (a type of synthetic resin), porcelain and gold. To meet the aesthetic conditions the most frequently used material is composite resin as it can be easily made to correspond with the color of natural teeth.

It is of particular significance that teeth cavities are detected in their early stages. If treated in early stages cavity filling is less painful and also cheaper than filling extensive decay. There may be a need of local anesthetics in some cases to alleviate pain during treatment and also to relieve anxiety.

Diagnosis of tooth cavities involves physical inspection. A dentist has different ways and means to detect damage to teeth. For this purpose she/he employs a good light source, dental mirrors and explorer. A dental x-ray may be necessary to arrive at the extent of damage whether the decay is superficial in the enamel or have traveled deep down.

Caries occur due to excessive acid formation as result of irregular and improper brushing, failure to floss your teeth and poor oral hygiene coupled with excessive intake of sugary snacks. There is no reason that a dental cavity should occur if you take good care of your teeth and maintain proper oral hygiene.

A tongue cleaner is exactly what the words signify. It is an oral hygiene tool for cleaning the surface and rear portion of the tongue. A tongue cleaning tool comes in various styles and depending upon design is also known as a tongue brush. Oral care and health problems often result in bacteria and fungi growth on the tongue. Moreover, one of the major causes of halitosis or bad breath is deposition of volatile sulphur compounds. Decaying bacteria produce these molecules that eventually get deposited at the rear end of your tongue leading to offensive mouth odor. Tongue cleaning is the most effective way of removing bacteria, decaying food debris, dead cells and fungi from the surface and the rear of the tongue. Tongue cleaning has been in use in ancient Indian and Chinese cultures as an essential part of oral hygiene. While most toothbrush manufacturers would advocate that a few gentle strokes of a toothbrush will effectively clean your tongue, the fact is that brushes are designed for cleaning the hard surface of teeth. The tongue tissue, on the other hand, is soft and spongy. Effectiveness of tongue cleaning tools depends largely on the shape, proportions and attributes of the contact material.

Modern tongue scrapers have ergonomic designs and shaped according to the anatomy of the tongue. These can effectively clean your tongue by trapping and lifting the plaque coating. The right time to clean your tongue is in the morning to avoid toxic build up on the tongue from getting swallowed along with food and liquids.

Most of the bacteria in the oral cavity flourish on the surface of your tongue. Bacteria from the tongue travel to all parts of the mouth through the saliva. These microorganisms are primarily responsible for gum disease, plaque, tooth decay and eventually tooth loss. Tongue cleaners are integral to oral hygiene and greatly reduce the risk of dental disease.

When it comes to treating bad breath, toothpastes and mouthwashes only provide temporary solutions. The surface of the tongue is actually the biggest breeding ground for foul smell generating bacteria and more. An unclean tongue is not only the major cause of halitosis or bad breath but also of gingivitis, blood clotting and inflammation of arteries.

Although tongue cleaning is a daily process you need not buy tongue cleaner over and over again. Most tongue cleaning devices last for many months. If you are careful in your choice you would like to choose from among those made from durable and virgin materials to avoid frequent breakages.

Contrary to the general belief tongue cleaning does not affect your taste buds. Tongue cleaning is not only a safe process but also crucial to oral hygiene. Use any tongue cleaner but before buying be sure that you buy one that is made of materials that are long lasting and designed according to the anatomy of the tongue.

A mouthwash is basically a medicated solution used for gargling and rinsing mouth and throat. It is commonly used to avoid bad breath and keep your mouth fresh. The question that arises is that why to use them when brushing with toothpaste gives you a fresh breath anyways. There are high-end toothpastes that combine cleaning and mouth freshening. The answer lies in that there are various types of products in this category. Some are simply for cosmetic purposes while others are for therapeutic use. Mouth rinses that you normally find in supermarkets have cosmetic value. These contain fluoride and other active ingredients for prevention of tooth decay and reduction of dental plaque. These are sodium fluoride based rinses with chlorhexidine as an active ingredient. Chlorhexidine is a long-lasting liquid antiseptic that is used by surgeons to wash their hands before performing surgery. These are not very effective in removing food particles embedded between teeth and are primarily meant for disguising bad breath. However, prolonged use of these rinses can prevent gingivitis as they do have an antimicrobial effect. At the same time, in the long term chlorhexidine may stain teeth, cause ulcers in the soft oral tissue and alter taste sensation.

Mouth rinses usually involve gargles with a small quantity poured into a glass. Another way is to use a mouthwash dispenser that comes with storage space, a tube opening and a pump. There are multiple designs of these glass or porcelain dispensers and can be refilled as when the need arises.

Besides rinses for concealing bad breath, there are also prescription mouthwashes for therapeutic use. Desensitizing rinses contain potassium nitrates to treat tooth sensitivity. Yet another type of rinse contains benzydamine, which has anesthetic and analgesic properties, and used to alleviate pain and discomfort due to inflammation of the mouth lining after chemotherapy.

Many people prefer a natural mouthwash to chemical rinses. Mint is one of the most common ingredients used for preparing natural rinses for treating bad breath. You can also prepare a mouth rinse at home by mixing one tbsp of brandy/vodka and few drops of essential oils in a small glass of warm water.

Your dentist may also prescribe antibiotic rinses. Antiseptic mouthwash is recommended for use after brushing and flossing and meant for reducing bacteria. An antiseptic rinse too has only cosmetic value unless it is prescribed by a dentist. Clove oil is a natural antimicrobial. 3/4 drops 4 ounces of warm make a very effective antiseptic rinse.

A mouth rinse is no substitute for teeth brushing and flossing. Some companies have been warned against the use advocating a rinse as a substitute to flossing. Flossing is manual removal of plaque and food particles from between your teeth. Although a mouthwash reaches the area between your teeth it cannot dislodge food particles embedded therein.

Dental floss is a dental product that allows you to clean those areas where toothbrushes cannot reach, like under the gum line and between teeth. Whatever the type of toothbrush you use the bristles are unable to penetrate these areas. Food particles and sometime foreign objects get stuck in between teeth. If food particles remain in the mouth for long, they tend to decay and lead to acid formation in the mouth. In addition, plaque, being a very thin film. Also tends to accumulate just beneath the gum line. Both can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Daily flossing is an important part of oral hygiene and is used to clean these hard to reach areas. There is a method to flossing and not difficult to learn. Take about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around your middle fingers leaving about an inch or two for flossing. Gently slide the free floss in between teeth while holding it tightly and using index fingers. Slide the floss softly up and down between teeth. Take the floss to below the gum line by curving it around the tooth base. Do not force the floss as this may harm the soft gum tissue. As you move from one tooth to another use a clean portion of the floss, winding the used section around your middle finger. Flossing only seems to be cumbersome but once you get used to it you will be able to do it with ease. Many people find it easier to use interdental brushes for flossing.

Basically interdental floss is similar to normal flossing. The term, however, has become associated with the use of interdental brushes. These brushes have small and specially designed bristles that are able to reach the area between teeth. These types of brushes can be very beneficial for those who have slighter bigger gaps between teeth.

For people suffering from arthritis dental flossing with normal floss can be a very tiring job. People with limited manual dexterity can use specially designed dental floss products. These come with reusable handles that can be gripped without fear of slipping. As flossing is to be done daily with new floss every time these convenient products have changeable heads.

When looking for gum dental floss there is two types of floss that you may choose from: nylon or multifilament floss or the more expensive PTFE or single filament floss. While nylon floss may tear or shred between tight contact points, PTFE floss is shred-resistant and ensures trouble free flossing as it slides easily between tight spaces.

The American Dental Association recommends that flossing should be done daily. The bristles of even ’soft’ toothbrushes are unable to clean the space between your teeth and under your gums. Choose whichever dental floss that you are comfortable with but remember that proper and complete cleaning of teeth is only possible with flossing.

Teeth brushing technique is simple but the sad part is that most of us fail to use it while brushing. Let us admit it; brushing teeth daily (although it is recommended that you clean your teeth twice in a day) is a monotonous job. What we fail to appreciate is that it is crucial for dental health and avoiding it or doing it the wrong way leads to many dental as well as other problems. What actually is the right way to clean your teeth? Before we go into the technique part the first that should be clear about is that you should clean your teeth for at least two minutes. Now, two minutes appears to be a very short time but the fact is that even those who are very careful about oral hygiene actually devote much less than that in brushing their teeth. The right way to brush is with short and gentle back and forth strokes as if sweeping away from the gum line. While you go about it you should ensure that you brush the gum line and also the back teeth that are hard to reach. Hold the brush head parallel to teeth while brushing and while cleaning use a circular motion. Make sure that you clean all teeth focusing at one section at a time. Use only a soft bristled toothbrush and toothpaste that contains fluoride. A toothbrush with a soft brush should be preferred as it allows you to brush each nook and corner.

Now that you know how to brush teeth it is also important that you know the different sections that you should focus on while cleaning. Clean the outside of upper and lower teeth first. Then clean the inside of both upper and lower teeth. With a circular motion clean the chewing surfaces.

While you brush your teeth, make sure to give one or two gentle strokes to your tongue also to remove bacteria and for a fresher breath. Changing your brush is as important as learning how to brush your teeth. Since toothbrushes wear out and become less effective change you toothbrush every three months.

If you use an electric toothbrush, then look for manufacturer’s instructions about how often you should change it. It is also important that you teach your kids teeth brushing techniques at an early age. Also tell them the importance of dental health. Kids are fast learners and more likely to retain the habit of brushing properly.

Oral hygiene is crucial to dental health. Besides brushing your teeth properly and regularly it is also imperative that you be careful about what you eat. Sugary snacks are the worst culprits that lead to cavities and tartar formation. Although of singular importance, daily brushing and teeth brushing technique is only a part of overall oral hygiene.

Ask any dentist and you will be told that dental cleaning is required every six months. However, it is not like that it can be done only by a dentist or a dental hygienist. Basically, teeth’s cleaning is a daily process and an integral part of oral hygiene. You can do free dental cleaning (actually almost free) at home by brushing and flossing your teeth regularly. In addition, it also requires you to pay attention to what you eat. While the importance of teeth cleaning cannot be denied it should be distinguished from the cosmetic process of teeth whitening. The importance of oral hygiene lies not only in the fact that it improves your looks, it is important for your general health as well. Ignore oral hygiene and you invite a host of problems. Although it seems to be a monotonous job, but if you are not brushing and flossing your teeth on a regular basis, you are inviting gum disease. Periodontal disease or gum disease is caused by accumulation of plaque and the consequent build up of tartar. Plaque is a thin film of bacteria that sticks to your teeth and if it is not removed daily it forms into incrustations known as tartar. Moreover, food that remains in your mouth for long tends to decay and lead to acid formation. Together, bacteria and acid lead to cavities and gum disease. The initial stage of gum disease (gingivitis) is reversible but left untreated it can lead to periodontitis, which can eventually progress and result in tooth and bone loss.

The story does not end here. Gum disease is not only the leading cause of tooth loss it has also been linked to heart disease and strokes. Regular dental teeth cleaning is important for prevention and also for early detection of dental problems. During dental check ups your dentist will notice early signs of cavities and/or gum disease. While gum disease in early stages is treatable once it progresses the only option available may be gum surgery, root canals or tooth extraction. A visit to the dentist can set you back by as much as $300. To avoid high dental cleaning cost it is imperative that you pay proper attention to oral hygiene, regular brushing and flossing. One of the basic things that most people ignore is to brush teeth twice daily. As mentioned earlier, if food particles remain in your mouth for long they lead acid formation, a major cause of tooth cavities.

Good oral hygiene is also essential for preventing halitosis or offensive breath. Sometimes even soft bristles of a toothbrush are not able to reach deep into the crevices between teeth and extract food particles embedded therein. One of the important dental cleaning tools that we tend to ignore is dental floss. Regular flossing ensures properly cleaning of sides between two teeth. You can avoid professional dental cleaning if you care for your teeth properly.

To understand dental hygiene it is important to know about tooth structure. The hard surface of the tooth is enamel and underneath it is dentin, a calcareous material harder and denser than bone that comprises the bulk of a tooth. A tooth has more calcium and phosphorus than bones and because of that it is harder. When a bone is broken the doctor puts it together and puts a cast over it to restrict mobility. The bone heals on its own as you grow more bone over a period of time. The same is not possible with your teeth. A cavity once formed does not fill up on it own new enamel does not grow like a bone does but cavities can be prevented from forming. The best way to do that is to maintain proper biological balance in your mouth. The saliva in your mouth has potent calcium and phosphorus ions. Your blood also has high concentration of these elements floating around. That means that the basic building blocks required for maintaining dental health are already available in the body. These can work for you but only under the right conditions. You can ensure that these conditions remain right by maintain the biological balance in your mouth. If calcium and phosphorus is getting deposited on your teeth as fast as they are leaving, then your teeth remain healthy. On the contrary, if calcium and phosphorus levels in the mouth drop, acid formation leads to formation of cavities and the hole keeps on growing.

Most importantly, a healthy and balanced diet helps in maintaining required levels of calcium and phosphorus in the saliva. A complete dental hygiene review by a dental hygienist will let you know the latest guidelines in the field of oral hygiene. A dental hygienist is trained to provide preventive dental service.

If you are able to take proper care of your teeth and gums and maintain the biological balance of your mouth, you are unlikely to need any of the dental hygiene products available in the market. A dental hygiene program comprising of regular and proper brushing with normal fluoride toothpaste should suffice.

You can maintain the biological balance of your mouth with a decent diet and avoiding sugary snacks. Most of the harm that is done to your teeth and gums is caused by acid that forms when bacteria interacts with food particles that get stuck between the teeth. The longer they remain the bigger the harm.

You may learn about complete dental hygiene programs directed towards improving your dental health. Dental health is basically about inhibiting tartar formation, an incrustation that forms on the teeth and gums. Dental hygiene, on the other hand, is a lifelong process, which will go a long way in avoiding expensive visits to a dentist.

From chew-sticks to tree twigs to bird feathers to animal bones to porcupine quills there have been a wide variety of oral hygiene measures in recorded history before the toothbrush. The modern mechanisms, however, remains as the undisputed leader as an instrument to clean teeth through brushing. There is also mention of different forms of cleaning teeth with brushes in ancient medicinal and religious literature. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine advocates the use of the neem tree and its products to create brushes for cleaning teeth. The neem tree is a large semi-evergreen tree of the East Indies whose trunk exudes a tenacious gum, its bitter bark used is as a tonic and its seeds yield aromatic oil. When chewed at one end a neem twig resembles bristles and is used to brush teeth. The miswak, made from a twig or root with antiseptic properties is another example that finds mention in Islamic religious literature. Modern brushes for cleaning teeth can be traced back to 1400s when they were invented in China. These were made of bamboo sticks on which stiff hairs from a pig’s neck were attached. The modern shape owes its discovery to William Addis, an Englishman who, in 1770, thought of improving the then prevalent method of rubbing a rag on one’s teeth with soot and salt. He took an animal bone, drilled holes in it and then passed tufts of bristles through the holes and glued them. Mass production started within ten years of William Addis’ first experiment that he performed while in jail.

With passage of time the natural bristles from animal hair were replaced by nylon fiber. Toothbrushes made from nylon yarn went on sale in 1938. In a study held in 2003 it became the number one invention Americans could not live without beating many other inventions like car, computer, microwave oven and cell phone. In 1959, a basic electric version was launched, which led to new electric and electronic products like Sonicare toothbrush with dual speed and timing controls.

An electric toothbrush is similar to a normal brush but uses electric power to oscillate the brush head. Unbiased research claims that these are no more effective than normal brushes. The rotation-oscillation models are an exception and perform better than regular brushes. However, for people who have problems with manual dexterity these can provide special benefits. The comparisons assume that brushing is done in the approved manner and for a suitably long period.

The oral toothbrush has traveled a long distance from the days the first brush was invented in its present shape. It remains the number one invention without which modern life is inconceivable. Brushes come in many sizes and forms. Although most bristles are made from synthetic fiber the bristle texture can vary a lot. Since hard bristles can erode tooth enamel and irritate gums most dentists recommend a toothbrush that has soft bristles.

Dental infections also tend to spread to other parts of the body through various channels. While most of us think that we are doing a good job with a toothbrush, floss or tape actually we may be doing it the wrong way. There is a method to brushing teeth and flossing and doing it the wrong way may actually cause more harm than you think. Ideally, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day. In fact you need to brush teeth after every meal but that may not be always possible. The least you can do is to brush your teeth after breakfast and dinner and rinse your mouth thoroughly after in-between meals or snacking. Brushing removes plaque, which is basically a thin layer of bacteria that sticks to teeth. Thorough rinsing immediately after a meal or snacking removes food particles that may still be loosely stuck in the crevices between teeth. Dental health is all about preventing bacteria to cause harm to your gums. The saliva in your mouth has a high concentration of calcium and phosphorus ions, the very stuff that teeth are made of, and also an effective first-aid fluid. Although it can take care of minor problems, our dietary habits can greatly affect dental health. Dental health is not only about cleaning teeth one way or the other it is also about eating properly and regular visits to a dentist.

The basic goal of brushing teeth is to remove bacteria-ridden plaque for avoiding cavity formation, massaging gums and maintain gum health. Your gums’ health depends upon proper brushing technique. The right way to brush teeth is through small circular motions using a soft toothbrush with the tips of the toothbrush placed at a 45 degree angle against the gum line. Use the same circular motion to clean the sides, chewing surface and backside of upper and lower teeth.

Change the position of the toothbrush when brushing the insides of upper or lower teeth. Give one/two gentle brush strokes to the tongue also and to ensure each and every healthy gum, floss once a day. Wind roughly 18 inches of floss around your middle fingers with at least one inch section free for flossing. Gently push the floss in between teeth and move the floss up and down the sides of the tooth and around the gum line.

Sugars and starches produce the most acid in your mouth. As much as possible, avoid eating sugary and starchy foods. Sugary snacks are the worst culprits that cause tooth decay. Starchy snacks like potato chips tend to stick to the teeth leading to excessive acid formation. If you must snack, to ensure healthy gums brush after snacking or at least thoroughly rinse your mouth using a dental solution and if nothing is available then with water.

The dental profession has done its level best to convince us that we that must go to a dentist regularly to get our teeth cleaned and checked if we want to maintain proper dental health. Dentists also take extra care to avoid mentioning the erosion of enamel. Howsoever minimal it may be, at least 2 to 3 microns does erode every time you get your teeth cleaned by a dentist. Dentists use abrasives and highly concentrated solutions to scrape off plaque that has formed on your teeth. These are prone to cause harm to the overall health of your teeth and gums. The fact, however, is that with proper dental care you can avoid visiting a dentist throughout your life. To understand it better you can equate the tartar that forms on your teeth with the scale that collects at the bottom of a tea kettle. Just as you remove the dark brown scale in a tea kettle by dissolving and scraping it, the dentist also does the same. The difference is that it is your mouth and gums that are involved in this case. The dental literature itself mentions that repeated scraping and use of harsh chemicals can cause damage to root surfaces.

Instead of having to scrape off scale every six months a better way is not to let tartar form on your teeth with proper dental health care. Your tooth is made of the same elements, calcium and phosphorus, as bones. However, broken bones heal by themselves, a broken tooth doesn’t because it has higher amount of these two elements.

Another thing to note is that when you are born there are no bacteria in your mouth: at least for the first few hours. Whatever bacteria that enters the body comes from the environment and not from inside. A healthy dental health plan should thus be directed at preventing entry of bacteria and formation of tartar.

More information on these and other related topics can be found at the following trusted websites. American academy of dental hygiene. or Sildenafil Citrate is the answer to male impotence problems. Cosmetic dentistry advices here.

When you are searching for dental health plans keep in mind that brushing is only one part of dental care. To keep your mouth and teeth healthy you need to brush (twice daily) and floss once daily) your teeth twice daily, limit sugary snacks, get adequate amount of calcium and stop smoking or chewing tobacco.

We have been conditioned to believe that cleaning of teeth by a dentist forms a part of dental health services. Cleaning of teeth or teeth whitening have very little to do with the health of your teeth and more of cosmetic value. The health of your teeth and gums is more about prevention and avoiding tartar formation.

We have also been conditioned to believe that sugar plays havoc with out teeth. The important thing however is not to let it remain in your mouth for too long. Proper dental care according to recommended lines can ensure dental health and you may not have to see a dentist at all.
